IP Policy at a Glance
Research outcomes funded under the STARS scheme are governed by the intellectual property policies of the participating institutions and the guidelines of the Ministry of Education, Government of India. The figure below summarises the IP rights framework for STARS-funded projects — from ownership of foreground IP by the originating institutions to the commercialisation pathways that carry innovations towards societal benefit.
In summary: the IP generated in a STARS project vests with the institution(s) where the research is carried out, following each institution's IP policy. Researchers are encouraged to protect and translate their results — through patents, technology transfer, or startups — so that publicly funded science creates demonstrable value for the nation. For a practical introduction, see the Workshop on Patent Filing and Prior Art Search Mechanisms material organised for STARS researchers.
